Online Safety Tips for Kids
The web can be a great place to hang out, to learn new things, and to exchange comments and ideas with other kids who are into the same things as you are.
But the web isn't always a safe place. We've set out some ideas that may help you deal with certain situations.
The Golden Rule is to never give out personal information about you on the Internet without first asking your parents. Personal information can mean:
Your name
Your address
Your age
Your phone number
Your mom or dad's name
The name of your school
The names of your teachers or your friends' names
If you run into something on the internet that makes you uncomfortable - whether it's on a website or something someone sent to you - tell your mom or dad, or an adult you can talk to right away, and get them to deal with it.
Not everyone is as nice, cute, and funny as they may sound online. Never agree to meet anyone in person you have "met" online.
Never send your picture over the internet without checking with your parents or another adult. Don't answer mean messages, or rude ones, or messages asking for personal information, even if the sender appears to be friendly. If you do get a message like that - tell your parents right away.
Always delete unknown email attachments without opening them. They can contain destructive viruses that will damage your family's computer.
Never download anything without asking for your parents' permission first. These can also contain viruses.
Remember that nothing you write on the web is completely private - including email. So be careful and think about what you type and who you tell.
Make sure you obey the rules that your parents have set out for you. Make up a cool nickname or email address when you surf, join a chat or a game online. Never tell anyone your real name or your password. Get your parents to read the Safety for Parents tips set out below.
Online Safety Tips for Parents
The Web can be a wonderful place for kids to chill out and learn about topics that are of interest to them. However, there are areas on the Internet that are not appropriate for children.
The guidelines we have drawn up are a starting point for parents of children who surf. The most important thing is to be aware of what your children are doing online. This may mean surfing with your children, or talking to them about the websites that they like or that they have discovered on the web.
Make surfing a family activity, particularly with young children.
Set ground rules, so each person knows what is expected of him or her. For example, you could go through the safety tips noted above together so everyone understands what is appropriate and what is not.
Software Solutions
There are software programs that allow parents to block certain websites from their kids. Some programs are more flexible than others, so you may want to shop around to find one that you're comfortable with.
You may contact us to request access to personal information we hold about you. Your request may be accepted or denied on the basis of any applicable laws. Also, if you wish that we discontinue the use of your personal information, please contact us.
